The Leesburg Planning Commission has unanimously voted to recommend to the city commission a modification of the large scale comprehensive plan to allow The Villages to construct an additional 6,800 homes within the city’s borders.
The Villages purchased the 3,700 acres from the Secret Promise holding company last September. The Villages is seeking to have the property designated as a 55-and-older gated community.
The property is bordered on the north by County Road 470, on the west by the Sumter County line and straddles the Florida Turnpike to the east. This property, along with The Villages of West Lake, will enable The Villages to construct a total 14,000 homes as well as some commercial property all within the city limits of Leesburg. City planning staff recommended approval of The Villages’ request and forwarded it to the city commission.
The annexation of this land brought the city limits of Wildwood to Leesburg’s western boundary. Commissioners asked no questions of The Villages executives who attended the meeting.
