A Tavares man known as a habitual traffic offender was arrested for driving with a suspended license for the 12th time.
Police observed a black two-door Chevrolet pickup with a female seated in the truck bed near U.S. Highway 441 and Echo Drive on Tuesday evening, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Due to this, the officer got behind the vehicle for a traffic stop and then spoke to the driver, identified as 46-year-old Cornelius Darnell Salters, the report said.
A check of Salter’s license showed seven suspensions, cancellations and revocations dating back to 2005. His criminal history revealed 11 prior convictions for driving while his license was suspended, several of which were habitual offender convictions. The most recent was dated Nov. 4, 2015, the report said.
The officer informed Salter of his license status, and he willingly stepped out of the car. He was placed under arrest for DWLS (habitual offender) and transported to the Lake County Jail. He was released after posting $2,000 bond.
