Leesburg Commission blesses plan for SunAir Aviation to expand at airport

Leesburg commissioners approved a plan Monday night that will allow SunAir Aviation to expand its footprint at Leesburg International Airport.

The commission agreed to allow the aviation company to rent another 60-by-60-foot hangar the airport. SunAir’s request to execute the lease came after three hangars became available in July.

SunAir Aviation operates at the Leesburg International Airport and won approval Monday night to rent another facility there and add maintenance services at its 13,000-square-foot hangar.

SunAir has a one-year agreement on the hangar for $13,200. The company will be allowed to conduct commercial business at the facility, which in the past was designated only for storage. It doesn’t have to specify any type of aircraft that will use the hangar, nor does it need the city’s approval to rent space to Leesburg-based or transient aircraft owners.

SunAir also won approval for a plan to expand its maintenance capabilities at its 13,000-square-foot hangar – the largest building it occupies at the airport. The jets SunAir houses in that hangar for storage are too large to be transferred to the company’s maintenance hangar for service and repair. So, the company requested the change in its agreement with the airport to better accommodate its customers who wish to take advantage of the repair services it offers.

SunAir’s main hangar is located at 32901 Wilco Drive on the airport’s property. The newly rented hangar is located nearby at 8855 Airport Blvd. The Airport Advisory Board OK’d both of SunAir’s request earlier this month and unanimously recommended approval to the City Commission.
