Leesburg commissioners OK plan to purchase new in-car cameras for police cruisers

Leesburg commissioners gave their blessings Monday night to the purchase of new in-car and body-worn cameras for the Leesburg Police Department.

The immediate need is for the in-car cameras, as the department is using a mix of systems, some of which are older and need to be replaced. Therefore, the first purchase will be for seven in-car video recording systems at a price of $37,085. The equipment will come from Watchguard Inc., which beat out two other companies, L3 Mobile-Vision Inc. and Digital Ally Inc., in the bidding process,

Funds are available for the purchase in the city’s current budget. And the police department is set to receive three Edward Byrne Memorial Grants totaling $33,795 that will cover the cost of the equipment.
