14-year-old with Leesburg ties charged in Mascotte drug deal murder

A 14-year-old has been arrested in the shooting death of a man in Mascotte last month.

Mar’quez Javon McFarland, who previously lived in Leesburg, was arrested Thursday in Orlando in connection with the Feb. 10 shooting death of 39-year-old Timothy Allen West in Mascotte. The Mascotte Police Department initially responded and then asked the Lake County Sheriff’s Office to take over the investigation. Sheriff’s detectives remain confident the murder was a result of a drug deal, a report states.

The U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force and the Orange County sheriff’s Juvenile Arrest Unit took McFarland into custody at Southwest Middle School on Dr. Phillips Boulevard in Orlando Thursday afternoon. He was then turned over to the Division of Juvenile Justice.

Detectives aren’t releasing any further details about the case, as the investigation is still active and ongoing.
