Police responded to a domestic aggravated assault at an undisclosed Leesburg residence around 3:06 a.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Upon arrival, an officer met with a female victim. She advised that her fiancé and partner of six years, 54-year-old William Charles Mathis, held a knife against her neck and threatened to kill her. Shortly after, three more officers arrived on scene, the report said.

The officer next interviewed Mathis who confirmed that he and the victim had been in a romantic relationship for six years. He explained that they got into a verbal argument in which he was frustrated with the victim and wanted her to leave. He claimed that at no point during the argument did he hold a knife against her neck, he just wanted her to leave the residence, the report said.

Another officer spoke to the victim while Mathis was being questioned. She advised that she was inside her bedroom playing a video game when Mathis walked in and asked for drugs. She told him that she did not have any on her, causing him to grow upset and walk to the kitchen to grab a knife she described as a steak knife, the report said.

After grabbing the steak knife, Mathis went back to the bedroom and held the knife to the victim’s throat, threatening to slice it. The victim did not know what happened to the knife, although there was a steak knife in the sink that she believed was the one he used. Neither she nor Mathis sustained any visible injuries, the report said.

Mathis was ultimately arrested on charge of aggravated assault with deadly weapon (domestic). The Georgia native was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $10,000.

He was also arrested in Jan. 2023 for the alleged theft of $400 in merchandise from Walmart.
