A deputy responded to the Wawa gas station, located at 16126 Greater Groves Boulevard in Clermont, regarding a stolen vehicle that had been found around 1:15 a.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, the deputy met with the female victim who advised her vehicle was located on the south side of the Wawa parking lot with a man, later identified as 33-year-old Carlos Piontek, in the driver’s seat. The vehicle, a white Cadillac XTS, was parked between two white box trucks. A felony traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle, and Piontek, the sole occupant, was placed in handcuffs to be placed in the back of the patrol vehicle, the report said.

After clearing the vehicle, the deputy found two clear plastic baggies containing a crystal-like substance within a brown Ray Bans glasses case. He also found a green leafy substance within a black Jansport backpack. The former tested positive for methamphetamine while the latter tested positive for CBD, the report said.

Piontek was read his rights, and he agreed to speak with the deputy. He advised that the backpack belonged to him, but the substance within was glasses case was not. The report noted that he was the only person found in the vehicle at the time of the stop. The deputy asked about the vehicle to which Piontek stated that he rented it and extended the rental.

The deputy then talked to the victim who advised that she rented the vehicle out to Piontek for two days. He did extend it but crossed state lines into Georgia, violating the agreement. She contacted him and told him to return early in the morning on Wednesday. He did not do so, causing the victim to file a stolen vehicle report with the Tampa Police Department, the report said.

Piontek was subsequently charged with possession of paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine and grand theft auto. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $6,000.

The New Jersey native was also arrested in Oct. 2023 in connection with a Pennsylvania injunction banning him from possessing a firearm.
