A man in a mobility cart was arrested Friday after allegedly attempting to steal more than $400 worth of merchandise from Walmart in Leesburg.
William Charles Mathis, 53, passed all points of sales with the merchandise in a store ride-on cart at approximately 10:40 a.m., according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. Mathis never entered a register aisle and exited out through an entrance section. Once at the door, Walmart staff asked him for a receipt, which he did not provide.
Mathis then went through the store’s general merchandise exit past the last point of sale. A Walmart asset protection associate approached Mathis, and he was again asked for a receipt. He still could not provide one, the report said.
Leesburg police officers arrested Mathis at Walmart and transported him to the Lake County Jail after completing the booking paperwork.
The Georgia native was charged with retail petit theft with two or more prior convictions. Bond was set at $2,000.
