A Leesburg man and his female companion were arrested on drug trafficking charges after a K-9 alerted on their vehicle during a traffic stop in Tavares.

Andrew Hedegard, 31, was a passenger in a car driven by Kelly Crane, 35, of Tavares, at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when a Lake County sheriff’s deputy stopped the car due to a suspected window tint violation.

Crane did not provide permission to search the vehicle, prompting a K-9 unit to be summoned to the scene. The dog alerted on the vehicle’s engine compartment. Deputies found more than 28 grams of methamphetamine, fentanyl and drug paraphernalia in a woman’s purse found under the air cleaner.

A rear seat female passenger told the deputies that she believed the purse belonged to Crane and said she saw Hedegard raise the hood while she was in the back seat.

Both Hedegard and Crane were arrested on charges of trafficking in Methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were booked at the Lake County Jail. Bond for each was set at $53,000.
