Stephen M. Mercer

Stephen M. Mercer, 70, of Leesburg passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

Stephen was born November 23, 1949 in Oakland, California to Edward and Beatrice (Benton) Mercer. He attended local schools and graduated from Troy State University.

Much of Stephen’s career was spent as an insurance agent. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Leesburg and the Porsche Club of America. Stephen was an avid University of Alabama football fan and loved cooking southern style meals. Stephen loved history and for over 30 years traveled the country participating in Civil War re-enactments. He achieved rank of General in the Confederate forces, slept in tents in the camps and loved sitting around the campfire telling stories and jokes. He enjoyed studying the different battle sites and information about the forces at each. Stephen was calm, patient and generous to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Debra Hutton Mercer, sons Patrick (Jodi) Mercer of California, Stephen (Jade) Mercer of Idaho, Ricky (Amy) Smith of Alabama, Doug (Suzy) Bell of Sorrento, FL and daughter Jennifer Fulford of Alabama. Stephen also leaves his grandchildren Sierra and Jonas Mercer and Trevor and Dylan Bell.
