Dr. Dixie Jean Allen

Dr. Dixie Jean Allen, a longtime Lake County educator, died Friday, February 23, at her home in Altoona. She was 96.
She was born in Malone in 1927 and attended primary schools in Graceville, Milton, Malone and Bonifay. In 1940 the family moved to Leesburg, where her father became Supervising Principal of Leesburg School. She graduated from LHS in 1946 and from Florida State College for Women (now FSU) in 1949. She earned an M.A, in Education from FSU in 1955, and an Ed.D. from the University of Florida in 1965.
Miss Allen began teaching business classes at Umatilla High School in 1949 and then spent five years as a teacher and counselor at South Broward High School in Hollywood. She returned to Lake County in 1954 and was a teacher and counselor at Leesburg High School for seven years.
From 1964 to 1988 she was Counselor, Instructor and Dean of Students at Lake Sumter Community College. She was the daughter of the late Donald R. and Della Clark Allen. She is survived by two brothers, the Rev. Dr. Donald R. Allen Jr., Harrisonburg VA, and Harry Allen, Eustis; and a sister, Sherry Satin, also of Harrisonburg; eight nieces and nephews and nine great nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at Forest Meadows Cemetery East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Road in Gainesville, Florida on Friday, March 15 at 1:00 PM.
