A Umatilla teen was arrested Monday morning for battering a teacher after pushing him to the ground during a tug-of-war over a backpack.Â
A 14-year-old student, whose name is being withheld because he is a juvenile, was charged with battery on a school official at Umatilla High School, located at 320 N. Trowell Avenue, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.Â
During first period, the juvenile was playing around in the boy’s restroom on the second floor of Building 23. A teacher asked him to come out and get to class. The victim, also a teacher, heard the exchange and walked out to help, the report said.Â
The victim asked the juvenile to go get a pass, but he refused the request. He instead insisted on getting a backpack out of a locker. The report noted that the lockers on school campus are not issued to any student.Â
As the juvenile reached into a locker to grab a backpack, the victim, not knowing who the backpack belonged to nor what was in it, tried to stop him. The juvenile pulled harder, but the victim was able to keep him from getting it. He then shoved the victim and knocked him to the ground, the report said.Â
The Texas native was subsequently arrested for the battery but released without bond.
