A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with a shooting earlier this month at Berry Park in Leesburg.
Theodore McNealy Jr. was taken into custody Sunday on a warrant charging him in the case.
The incident occurred in the late afternoon Jan. 8 during a time when there were several families in the park, and one local organization was holding a fund raiser, according to a media release from the Leesburg Police Department. No one was injured in the shooting.
The shooting occurred when a group of young men on foot approached a red Chevy Impala near the entrance to the park. They brandished pistols and began shooting at the men in the car. After numerous shots were exchanged, the men on foot retreated through the park. The car fled the scene, according to the warrant.
Witnesses and surveillance led police to “the person who initiated the gun fight and shot first” – an individual known as “Little T,” the warrant said. Little T was identified as McNealy. He is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.
The Leesburg Police Department is still actively investigating this incident and attempting to identify a possible second shooter in the incident. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Leesburg Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, or Central Florida Crimeline.
