A Leesburg man was arrested after he was caught with three MDMA-laced marijuana cigarettes in his pocket during a traffic stop.
Devin Jamal Owens, 27, of 2001 Waitman Ave., was a passenger in a silver Jeep driven by 20-year-old Wildwood resident Kyeshaun A. Neal that a Leesburg Police officer spotted traveling east on Griffin Road near Beecher Street at around 3 a.m. Tuesday with a damaged tail light. A computer check of the license plate number showed the vehicle registration had expired Jan. 30, according to the police report.
The officer pulled the vehicle over near the intersection of Griffin Road and Peters Drive and spoke with Neal, who said he and Owens were on their way to Wawa on behalf of another person who was intoxicated. However, they had already passed the store. Both Neal and Owens were acting nervously and the distinct smell of burnt marijuana was emanating from the vehicle, the report said.
A K-9 unit arrived at the scene to conduct a free-air sniff, and the dog gave a positive alert for narcotics in the vehicle. The vehicle was searched and multiple items of contraband belonging to Neal were recovered. Neal was placed under arrest, according to the report.
Owens was also searched and three marijuana cigarettes were found in his pocket. The joints were examined and found to contain a crystal substance that tested positive for MDMA, the report said.
Owens was charged with possession of a controlled substance (MDMA) and taken to the Lake County Jail, where he was released later Tuesday on $2,000 bond. He’s due to appear in Lake County Court on March 22.
