Leesburg Fire Rescue seeks FEMA grant to pay for respirators amid COVID-19

Leesburg commissioners gave their blessings Monday night for the city’s fire department to seek a grant to pay for personal protective equipment amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant is available through FEMA and would be used to purchase 20 powered air-purifying respirators and filter cartridges. The grant would provide $25,272, or 90 percent of the cost of the equipment.

Leesburg’s cost would be $2,808, which is available in the city’s current budget, according to a memo from Dep. Fire Chief Joe Mera.
