69 percent of tri-county COVID-19 cases in The Villages and five cities

Of the 725 cases of the Coronavirus that have been reported in the tri-county area, 69 percent have been identified in The Villages and five cities.

Ocala leads the way with 156 COVID-19 cases, followed by Bushnell with 121, Clermont with 84, The Villages with 71, Leesburg with 39 and Summerfield with 26. All but three of the cases in Bushnell have been reported at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 102 inmates and 16 staff members. The state prison also has two inmates in medical isolation and another 910 in medical quarantine.

The 725 cases in the tri-county area – Sumter, Lake and Marion counties – are divided upon 390 men, 315 women and 20 non-residents. There have been 35 deaths and 142 people have been hospitalized.

The youngest patient in the tri-county area has been identified as a 6-month-old girl from Summerfield, while the oldest are two 97-year-old women. One lives in Sumter County and its unknown if she had traveled recently or been in contact with anyone else suffering from the virus. The other one, who lives in Marion County, hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with any other COVID-19 patients.

Sumter County held steady Sunday at 251 cases divided among 179 men, 69 women and three non-residents. There have been 16 deaths and 44 people hospitalized in the county that contains the majority of homes in The Villages.

Lake County increased by two cases to 252 on Sunday. They are comprised of 117 men, 123 women and 12 non-residents. There have been 14 deaths and 67 people have required some form of hospital care.

Marion County also increased by two cases on Sunday to 222 among 94 men, 123 women and five non-residents. There have been five deaths and 31 people have been hospitalized.

All told, Florida was reporting 45,588 cases – an increase of 777 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 44,369 are residents. There have been 1,973 deaths and 8,230 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
