A Lake County sheriff’s K-9 deputy is being lauded for saving a motorist’s life last year.

Sheriff Peyton C. Grinnell awarded Dep. James Simmons with a Life Saving Medal for his actions following a Nov. 26, 2018 vehicle crash. When Simmons arrived at the crash scene, he discovered a burning vehicle on its side with a motorist still inside.

Simmons, along with other deputies, worked to break the window and extract the unresponsive driver, all while using fire extinguishers to keep the fire from spreading. Once removed from the vehicle, the driver regained consciousness and was airlifted to an area hospital.
