A Leesburg woman was arrested on theft and burglary charges after allegedly stealing a package worth more than $100 off her neighbor’s doorstep.
An officer responded to a report of a package being stolen from the doorstep of an undisclosed Leesburg residence, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
Upon the officer’ s arrival, the victim advised that she bought multiple orders online totaling $124.14 that were shipped together from Shein. She received a notification on her camera and by email that the package was delivered right in front of her door at about 8:44 a.m. March 16. Later in the morning when she went to retrieve her package, it was no longer at her door or anywhere else under the enclosed curtilage, the report said.
The victim then checked her surveillance cameras. On her phone, she was able to review the footage that showed a woman, eventually determined to be 45-year-old Jenney Rohanny.
The victim approached her neighbors to see if they knew who the suspect was. While walking southbound toward the pond, she saw a ripped-up package in the grass. She realized it was her stolen package but with none of the items contained within. She still spoke with her neighbors who told her that Joseph lived in the same building, the report said.
The officer and the victim both went to the unit to get Joseph to return the items. Once she opened the door, she clearly matched the description in the video. The officer explained the reason for their visit as well as what he viewed on the surveillance footage, which Joseph asked to see, the report said.
Once Joseph watched the footage, she started to apologize multiple times for taking the package. She explained that she was going to have her adult daughter bring the items back and to please not press charges. She kept stating that she knew what she did was wrong, and she would get the items back to the victim within the hour, the report said.
Later, when officers went to speak with Joseph, she refused to answer the door and called the LPD stating she was picked up by her adult daughter to go to work. She also stated that she returned the items. However, when the officer spoke to the victim again, she said that not all items were returned, the report said.
Joseph was subsequently arrested and charged with grand theft (from dwelling or curtilage, value) and burglary (curtilage of dwelling – occupied). The native of Saint Pierre and Miquelon was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $12,500 bond.
