Leesburg school bus driver involved in fatal crash claiming life of bicyclist

A Leesburg woman driving a school bus was involved in a fatal crash claiming the life of a bicyclist.

The 78-year-old woman was at the wheel of the Lake County school bus at 6:50 a.m. Monday at Hancock Road and Fox Trail Avenue near Minneola High School when the bus collided with the 17-year-old male bicyclist from Minneola, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. She had been attempting to make a left turn into the high school.

The bicyclist had been in the crosswalk and the school bus driver swerved to avoid him. However, the bus hit the bicyclist, a chain link fence and a stop sign.

The teen was transported by ambulance to South Lake Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The school bus driver as well as a 55-year-old female passenger from Leesburg and an 18-year-old female passenger from Minneola were not injured.

This crash remains under investigation.
