A Leesburg man was charged with drunk driving for the third time after he was caught speeding.

Police observed a silver Honda truck traveling at an excessively high speed in the area of U.S. Highway 441 and Newell Hill Road at about 9:53 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The speed was verified to be 66 mph in a 45-mph zone.

Upon speaking with the driver, 74-year-old Paul Ludolph, the officer explained the reason for the stop. He noticed that Ludolph’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy. He could also smell the distinct odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from this breath as he spoke, the report said.

Ludolph was then asked to participate in field sobriety exercises, which he agreed to do. His performance during the exercises led the officer to believe he was driving under the influence. Breath tests taken later resulted in .139 and .147, the report said.

A background check revealed that Ludolph had two prior DUI convictions in 1995 and 1997, the report said.

The Maryland native was arrested and charged with DUI (third offense more than 10 years). He was issued two citations for DUI and for speeding. He was transported to the Lake County Jail upon completing the booking process and released after posting $5,000 bond.
