A Leesburg man traveling with a female passenger was arrested at gunpoint for a traffic offense.

A Fruitland Park police officer was on patrol Tuesday evening when he saw a white Volkswagen near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 441 and County Road 466A. While stopped at the intersection, the officer was in position to read the Volkswagen’s tag number and perform a records check. The records check revealed that the car’s registration had expired on April 15.

When the officer turned on his emergency lights to conduct a traffic stop the VW, the driver changed lanes and continued to drive southbound on U.S. Hwy. 441. When the officer turned on his siren, the VW continued to drive at 30 mph and turned onto Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard without stopping. The VW then turned into the Crossings apartment complex and came to a stop.

The officer completed what he described as a high risk traffic stop by drawing his pistol and ordering the driver and his female passenger to raise their hands. The officer had the driver, later identified as 31-year-old Demarcus Antonio Green, exit the vehicle and submit to being handcuffed. He had the female exit the vehicle and he handcuffed her. When questioned Green, told the officer that he was aware that he was being followed by the officer but said he was afraid to stop and wanted to stop in a safe place so he drove to the apartment complex. Green admitted that he never has had a driver’s license.

Green was charged with driving without having a valid drivers license/never had one and failure to obey a police officer. He was transported to the Lake County Jail where he posted $2,000 bond and was released.
