Area residents and boaters are being asked to help watch out for manatees that are in the Harris Chain of Lakes and the Ocklawaha River year-round.
Here are some tips from the Lake County Water Authority to help ensure the safety of the gentle giants:
- Use extreme caution when boating near the shoreline;
- Check your boat prop before starting it; and
- Never approach or feed a manatee.
Researchers are studying their habits as the manatees explore their new area. Please report all sightings to the FWC Wildlife Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922) or Tips@myfwc.com.
