A drunk driving suspect on a Slingshot motorcycle with two guns was arrested during Leesburg Bikefest.
Officers walking their zone of downtown Leesburg noticed a red Slingshot, a three-wheeled motorcycle, making a wide left turn from 9th Street onto West Main Street around 11:40 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.
While making the turn, the rear wheel of the vehicle spun making a squealing noise, and the vehicle went over the curb. It came to a controlled rest within the intersection of Lee Street and West Main Street. Due to the vehicle’s reckless manner and stopping in the middle of an intersection, the two officers approached the driver, 64-year-old David Troy McKown of Jacksonville, and the passenger, the report said.
McKown advised that while negotiating the turn, he had an issue with his vehicle causing him to briefly lose control. He further stated he was trying to get directions back to The Villages where he was staying. While speaking with McKown, one of the officers noticed his eyes to be glassy and watery with slurred speech, the report said.
Due to the signs of impairment, McKown was asked to step out of the vehicle. He appeared to be unsteady on his feet by swaying and staggering as he complied. A pat-down search of his person revealed two firearms, after which he was asked to step out of the roadway and onto the sidewalk, the report said.
An officer explained to McKown that he observed signs of impairment and was requesting he perform field sobriety exercises, to which he agreed. He admitted to having a few beers before starting them. He also advised that he had a bad knee, hip and shoulder on his right side. As the officer directed him to an area with better lighting, he watched McKown stagger while walking, the report said.
McKown became agitated and would not listen to the instructions during the exercises. For the walk and turn exercise, he refused to do it unless the officer drew out a line on the ground. He also refused to do the one leg stand unless the officer told him a number to count to, the report said.
As a result of McKown’s foregoing, he was placed under arrest and taken to LPD for booking paperwork and a breath sample. However, he refused to provide a breath sample even after being read implied consent, the report said.
McKown was ultimately charged with DUI and transported to Lake County Jail. The California native was released after posting $1,000 bond.
