54-year-old pedestrian struck and killed at busy Leesburg intersection

A 54-year-old pedestrian was killed late Monday night in Leesburg.

The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 27 and Griffin Road when the Leesburg man was struck by a 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by an 18-year-old man, also of Leesburg. An initial investigation by the Leesburg Police Department shows that the pedestrian walked into the path of the pickup, a report says.

The pedestrian, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to UF Health Leesburg Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries. The crash remains under investigation by the police department’s traffic unit and witnesses to the crash are being asked to contact them at (352) 787-2121.
