Leesburg International Airport getting $4.7 million FAA grant for runway work

Leesburg International Airport is expecting to receive a $4.7 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration in the near future.

The Federal Aviation Administration has approved a $4.7 million grant for improvements on the primary runway at Leesburg International Airport.

The grant, which was presented to Leesburg commissioners Monday night, will be used to pay for 90 percent of the cost of a rehabilitation project on the facility’s primary runway, which is 6,300 feet long and known as 13-31. The remaining $520,749 needed to complete the $5.2 million project, which includes paving and paved shoulders, will come from CARES funding, according to a memo from Tracey Dean, airport manager.

Dean’s memo says the airport has received verbal confirmation from the FAA of approval of the grant. The request had to be signed by Mayor Elise Dennison and City Attorney Fred Morrison and returned to the FAA by Sept. 4. Commissioners will receive a copy of the fully executed grant to be accepted by resolution sometime in September, the memo says.
