Convicted felon nabbed after running from Leesburg Police and jumping on rooftop

A man was arrested Thursday night on a multitude of charges after running from Leesburg Police officers.

The officers initiated a traffic stop shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ross Street and Sumter Street. The vehicle’s driver, 39-year-old Roger Dale Sands, fled on foot and managed to climb to the roof of a nearby residence before being taken into custody a short time later.

Sands, a laborer who does tree work and lives in the 100 block of N 15th St. in Leesburg, was transported to the Lake County Jail and charged with vehicle theft, possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, display/use of a concealed firearm during a felony and possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He is being held on $40,000 bond and is due in court Dec. 30 at 8:30 a.m.

Sands also was arrested in 2014 by Fruitland Park Police officers after being accused of trying to walk out of Wal-Mart with a pair of stolen shoes on his feet.

Roger Dale Sands, 39, was in possession of the items shown above when he was arrested Thursday night after fleeing from Leesburg Police officers.
