A Leesburg man was arrested after allegedly headbutting his mother and robbing her over $96 in scrapyard money.

The mother of 42-year-old Jason Willis Powell returned to their shared home near Luana Court in Leesburg at 2:40 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. She brought with her $96 from a scrapyard, and Powell demanded a portion of that money.

During the argument that followed, he snatched the money from her hands. She repeatedly asked for it back until he forcefully struck his head against her, causing her to push his chest. He then pushed her chest, grabbed her by her hair and dragged her across the ground. He threw $30 at her before leaving, the report said.

A witness advised that she saw Powell grab hold of his mother’s hair and throw her across the yard. He took the money from her, and as she caught her balance, he pulled on her. She proceeded to trip over an object and fall to the ground, skinning her knee, the report said.

A video taken by a neighbor confirmed the two were arguing, with Powell towering over his mother. He ultimately pulled his head back and brought it forward to smash into his mother’s head, the report said.

Deputies were able to find Powell at Treadway School Road and County Road 473 in Leesburg. A search of his person yielded $50 in cash, the report said.

His mother later expressed her concerns about prosecuting him despite his repeatedly battering her in the past. He once told her that if he got sent to jail over her, he would kill her. She was obviously very scared of the possible retaliation that could come with pressing charges against Jason. She pleaded that his outbursts toward her must stop, the report said.

A criminal history check revealed he had a previous battery conviction in 2018 for battery on a pregnant woman, the report said.

Powell was arrested on charge of battery (second or subsequent offense – domestic) and robbery by sudden snatching (domestic). He was booked at Lake County Jail without bond.

The North Carolina native was also arrested in Sept. 2025 after he was busted with narcotics while taking an Uber to a doctor’s office.
