Michael Kelly, affectionately known as “Poppy” to his grandchildren, was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on February 24, 2024, at the age of 83 in Leesburg, Florida. Born on February 16, 1941, in Manhattan, New York, to Mortimer and Christine Kelly, Michael was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Patricia Perez.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Elizabeth; sister, Barbara Mullen; children: Christine Ayers (husband DJ), Michael A. Kelly (wife Barbara), and JoAnn Rupertus (husband Ron); grandchildren: Shawn Kelly (wife Ashley), Steven Ayers, Patrick Ayers (wife Kayla), Kelly Ann Means (husband Josh), Ryan Ayers, Brendan Kelly (wife Rebecca), Michael J. Kelly, Matthew Ayers, and Ronnie Rupertus (partner Shelby). He is also survived by his 10 great-grandchildren.

Michael led a life marked by dedication and service. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, earning Good Conduct Medals. Following his military service, he dedicated himself to the New York City Police Department, where he earned numerous accolades, including the Bronze Star Commendation, Meritorious Police Duty, and Excellent Police Duty. Michael’s commitment to his fellow officers led him to serve as a New York City Police Benevolent Association (PBA) delegate. After retiring from the force, he continued his service with the United States Postal Service.

Beyond his professional achievements, Michael was an alumnus of the New York School of Printing. Additionally, he had a passion for collecting coins and baseball cards, hobbies he shared with many of his grandchildren. He also grew up as an avid New York Giants baseball fan and enjoyed watching, playing, and coaching the sport. In his leisure time, Michael found joy in woodworking, golfing, and reading.

Despite his many accomplishments and interests, it was our dad’s warmth and kind personality that endeared him to so many. His devotion to his family was unparalleled, and his passing has left a hole in the lives of all who knew him.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Michael’s life will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, at 12:30 PM ET at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Leesburg, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations to be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Wounded Warrior Project in Michael’s memory.

Michael “Daddy” “Poppy,” we will miss you dearly, but your legacy and spirit will live on in your family and the many others whose lives you touched. May you rest in eternal peace.
