A Fruitland Park lawn care worker was arrested for attempted homicide after shooting his friend in the arm during an argument over a drill in his driveway.
Deputies responded to an undisclosed Fruitland Park residence regarding a shooting that happened around 3 p.m. Friday, according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. The victim advised he was shot in the arm while arguing with 39-year-old Michael Robert Corkill.
Once deputies were on scene, they began rendering aid to the victim. Corkill had already retreated to his own residence, located at 36751 Shadow Hill Drive, and locked his doors. Deputies established a perimeter around his home and notified LCSO’s SWAT of the barricaded subject, the report said.
A detective with LCSO responded at 5:36 p.m. and spoke with deputies about the situation. They advised that the victim, Corkill’s friend, arrived at his house that night to work on a disabled four-wheeler. He grabbed a drill lying next to the four-wheeler, but Corkill began yelling at him not to touch his belongings, the report said.
A verbal argument ensued, during which Corkill stated he “got something” for the victim. He walked across the street to his residence and shortly after stepped back outside with what appeared to be a black rifle. He shot the victim in the left forearm from the driveway of his residence before going back inside, the report said.
The victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his left forearm and was holding the projectile while the detective was there, the report said.
Upon the SWAT team’s arrival, Corkill did not answer any callouts directed to his residence by the LSCO patrol vehicle’s in-car speaker systems. The team then entered his home and placed him in custody. He did not wish to make any statements to law enforcement regarding anything that transpired, the report said.
Corkill was ultimately charged with attempted homicide and taken to the Lake County Jail. He is being held without bond.
