Elsworth “Ace” Chavis of Eustis, Florida passed away on Sunday February 18, 2024, at the age of 79.

He was born to his parents Groveland Cleveland and Strawdie Chavis in Rowland, North Carolina on April 6, 1944. Ace moved to Florida in 1967. He is of the Lumbee Indian Tribe. He worked as a chef and had a passion for cooking. He also enjoyed landscaping, gardening, and fishing. He married the love of his life Maxine Chavis in 1971. He also retired from being a long-time chef in 2001.

Ace is preceded in death by his parents, and several brothers and sisters.

Ace is survived by his wife Maxine Chavis; children John Charles Johnson Jr. (Amy), and Sharnell Shirree Chavis (Dan); siblings Joseph Chavis (Ethel), Wayne Chavis (Belinda), Shirl Rising (Gilbert), Carolyn Leadell, Rose Hunt, Grace Chavis, Delores Allen, and Mearlene Weiss (Wendell); grandchildren John, Sheyenne, Janae, Alyssa, and Liam; great grandchildren Colton, Talan, and Maybrie; along with several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday February 21, 2024, from 11 AM- 12 PM at Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel. A service will follow at 12 PM, along with a committal service at Seminole Springs Cemetery in Eustis, Florida.
