Police spotted a motorcycle being ridden by 25-year-old Javier Colon Rodriguez doing wheelies around 11:59 a.m. Friday, according to a case report.

The officer turned on his front dash camera in hopes it would catch the driving. He did some narration describing what was happening, but he did not attempt a traffic stop at this time due to traffic and the belief that the vehicle may flee, the report said.

As they traveled through the city of Astatula, Rodriguez was behind a van and at one point looked back at the patrol car. During this time, he took both hands off the handlebars. The officer turned his front camera on again as Rodriguez began causing the front wheel to leave the ground, the report said.

At County Road 561 and Lane Park Cutoff Road in Tavares, Rodriguez pulled into a business. The officer pulled in behind him and initiated a traffic stop. Immediately, Rodriguez called his girlfriend to translate over the phone, the report said.

Rodriguez advised that he was having a problem with his clutch. However, he rode for a long distance without causing the front wheel to leave the ground, so his explanation was not supported by his riding, the report said.

A check revealed that his driver’s license was suspended in July for failure to appear on traffic summons. As a result, the officer placed Rodriguez in handcuffs, the report said.

A search of Rodriguez resulted in the officer finding a cigar package with two cigars and a marijuana “blunt.” He stated he had marijuana in his pocket, which later tested positive for such. Also in his left jacket pocket were several loose round pills. Some of the pills fell to the ground as the officer removed them, but 11 were recovered, the report said.

Rodriguez advised the pills were for his anxiety. When the officer asked if he had a prescription, he did not give an answer. These pills were later identified as generic Adderall that he did not have a prescription for, the report said.

The Michigan native was arrested and charged with driving while license suspended, no motorcycle endorsement, possession of marijuana (less than 20 grams) and possession of prescription drug without prescription (Adderall). He was also issued a citation for riding wheelies. He was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $3,000 bond.
