A sex offender from Fruitland Park was arrested for drunk driving after an officer spotted him driving dangerously in Leesburg.Â
Police observed the driver of a silver Volvo utility vehicle, later identified as 47-year-old David George Evans, driving recklessly, failing to stop at a stop sign and speeding in the 1700 block of Citrus Boulevard around 11 p.m. Dec. 8, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.Â
The officer conducted a traffic stop, and Evans exited the driver’s seat, the report said. He provided his license which came up with seven suspensions and cancelations dating back to 2010 when the officer checked his driving history.Â
Another officer was then asked to respond and conduct a DUI investigation. He arrived and spoke with Evans, who was handcuffed. While doing so, the officer observed bloodshot watery eyes and noticed a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath as he spoke, the report said.Â
Evans was asked to participate in field sobriety exercises, to which he agreed. Due to several indicators of impairment, including not being able to follow or forgetting instructions, unsteady coordination and mumbled speech, Evans was arrested under suspicion of DUI, the report said.Â
The officer placed Evans in his patrol car and transported him to the LPD for a breath test. Although he initially declined to take it, Evans eventually took the tests resulting in 0.134g/210L and 0.127g/210L of breath, the report said.Â
Evans was subsequently charged with DUI and released after posting $1,000 bond.Â
Evans was registered as a sex offender in 2010 after being convicted of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors 16/17 years old. He has also twice been found guilty of failing to comply with registration in 2016 and 2019.Â
