A Leesburg man working as a Walmart employee was arrested for stealing from the store on three occasions using the self-checkout lines.
Officers responded to Walmart, located at 17030 U.S. Hwy. 441, regarding an employee shoplifting around 1:43 p.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Mount Dora Police Department.
Upon arrival, the officers met with an asset protection employee who stated she had an employee, later identified as 57-year-old David William Beserock, in the room with her that was caught stealing. They walked inside the asset protection office to find Beserock and another asset protection employee. The employee gave them sworn written affidavits and verbal testimonies with the intent to prosecute on behalf of the store, the report said.
The employee also provided video surveillance showing three occasions when Beserock concealed items and left the store by passing all points of sale. On July 5, he was seen in his Walmart vest in the Sporting Goods Section with an unidentified female. He selected a fishing reel and headed toward the grocery side of the building to conceal it under his vest, the report said.
Beserock then made his way to the Walmart breakroom, and after a few minutes, he made his way out of the breakroom with just a Walmart bag in hand. He went to self-checkout where he could be seen scanning the area before heading out the entrance without paying for $449 in merchandise, the report said.
On July 8, Beserock was in his Walmart vest again with a shopping cart and a generator. He scanned the area and made his way to the front of the store, leaving the hardware area. He pushed the cart right past the self-checkout lines and headed through the general exit with the generator inside the cart for a total loss of $484, the report said.
On July 20, Beserock walked the sales floor while selecting Velvetta mac and cheese, coleslaw and a gallon of milk. He concealed these items inside a gray Walmart bag. He then headed to the breakroom for a few minutes, after which he headed toward the self-checkout lines and left without paying for the $14.31 worth of food, the report said.
As the employee finished giving the officers surveillance video, they read Beserock his rights and asked him if he wished to speak. He refused to do so. The employee still confirmed that he stole $547.31 worth of merchandise. The officers were also given paperwork containing an itemized receipt and a CD containing video surveillance footage of the incidents, the report said.
Beserock was subsequently arrested on three counts of retail theft. He was transported to Lake County Jail with bond set at $1,500.
