The leader of the band, June (Nancy) Feustel, passed away on Sunday, October 22nd, 2023, surrounded by love. She was 97 glorious years old. She was shooting for triple digits and we’re darn sad she came up short. Trying to encapsulate her life in a few sentences is a futile gesture, but let’s give it a go.

Mom (that’s June, to those that aren’t family) was born in Sacramento, California on June 18th, 1926, so don’t blame her for the mess it’s in now. She met the one and only love of her life, our father, Ray Feustel, in CA while she was working for the Bank of America in the early 1950’s. Dad, being from WI and leading the vagabond lifestyle of a contract lineman, fell hard for mom and decided they should get married. Mom agreed whereupon they decided to make their home in Leesburg, FL. When asked why they chose FL our father always humorously opined “to be as far away from all our relatives as possible”. I’m sure he was kidding, right?

Mom raised five kids, four boys and a girl, all this without drinking or smoking. Sainthood is a given. Our collective lives have been rich beyond measure because of this selfless woman, not with material things, but with her time and love. Growing up she was indeed the center of our world. She did it all; bus driver (station wagon), mediator (see: five kids) cook (see: five kids) and financial wizard. She was a modern day renaissance woman before the term was ever coined. Do the math; five kids, somewhat evenly spaced out, all engaged in a myriad of activities from baseball, football, ballet (not the boys), golf, track etc, all while holding down a job and you get a glimpse of ‘a day in the life’.

Mom’s working career started at Gibson Winery and Bank of America in CA and after moving to FL kicked off with Boyd’s Furniture, Tropic Builders, Lake Office Equipment and finishing up with the gang at Profiles Salon. She always enjoyed the people she worked with and found great satisfaction and happiness in helping them achieve their business goals. The friendships she made during her lifetime tended to be just that, lifetime, as she was not a fair-weather friend.

Mom is survived by all five of her children, (a few who still act that way) Bruce, Greg (Kathy), Clay (Beth), Troy (Lynda) and Lori (Rick). She was also blessed with five grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by our father, Raymond and are now probably on a dance floor together.

There will be a Celebration of Life for mom on Sunday, December 3rd at Lake Miona Center, 1526 Buena Vista Blvd, The Villages, Fl. 32162 from 11:30am to 1:30pm.
