Police responded to a traffic accident near the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Pleasantdale Drive at about 12:26 a.m. Sunday, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

Upon arrival, the officer observed a black Ford Fusion over the curb and crashed into a construction site fence on Cleveland Av. The driver, 33-year-old Twylla La’Jewel Wright, was still in the driver’s seat due to the driver side door being pinned by the fence, the report said.

The officer noticed Wright had glassy eyes and the odor of alcohol on her breath as she spoke to him. He asked her several times to show her license, registration and proof of insurance, but she asked multiple times what he needed from her despite clear instructions. She eventually got out everything except her insurance, the report said.

During this interaction, Wright spoke with slurred speech and would become agitated very easily. She advised that she was driving eastbound on Cleveland Av and somehow ended up crashing into the fence. She could not recall how she crashed, the report said.

The driving pattern established based on marks on the road and curb indicated Wright was driving eastbound on Cleveland Av when her vehicle ran over the curb to the right. She then struck a “Bicycle Lane” sign, ran over the positive median barrier to the center, crossed over a westbound lane and struck a construction site fence and cable box. The estimated cost of the damage was about $1,300, the report said.

After finishing the crash investigation, the officer began conducting a DUI investigation, the report said. Wright declined to answer any questions regarding the incident, and she refused to participate in field sobriety exercises. Despite her refusals, the officer placed Wright under arrest based on her demeanor. Breathe tests taken later confirmed his suspicions with results of 0.218 and 0.207.

Wright then made several spontaneous utterances such as “I went two weeks without drinking,” “I used to be an alcoholic, and I started drinking again because I went through a relationship problem” and “I drank tonight, and I overdid it,” the report said.

Once Wright was medically cleared from UF Health freestanding ER, she was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. She was charged with DUI (damage to property or person) with bond set at $500.
