Sylvia Kathleen McCulloch, 87, of Yalaha, Florida went to her forever home on Thursday, October 12, 2023.

Born in Staten Island, New York in 1935, Sylvia was the daughter of Raymond and Sara (Ludy) Meeker. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ruth, and her brother Raymond. Sylvia spent most of her school years living in Pottstown, Pennsylvania near her large extended family. Sylvia was raised in a family with a traditional love for music. She learned to play the piano, clarinet and the violin and played the piano and sang in her church choir.

One of her fondest memories was being a part of the family orchestra that met at her uncle’s house each Wednesday evening, where everyone played their favorite instrument including her grandmother who played the drums. Sylvia enjoyed working outside the home, and her work ethic awarded her supervisory roles quickly. She met her late husband, John while she was the quality control manager of a telecommunications corporation in Maryland and he was a manager of engineering.

One weekend they discovered a lot on a mountain top in West Virginia and decided to build a home there. Despite the long commute to and from their job, they completed most of the interior work themselves, often stopping late at night to pick up materials for the next project.

Sylvia loved creating her own special place and never seemed to tire. She made a home and a haven for family and friends and loved having her grandchildren swim in the pool. She also made a dear lifelong friend next door and the two of them spent many weekends working together in each other’s yards.

Retirement eventually led Sylvia and John from the cold West Virginia winter to Florida where they could enjoy boating, fishing and gardening and The Springs community was a perfect resting spot. When John passed away, Sylvia decided to stay in The Springs and enjoy her new home and friends. She volunteered her time on the board or in various committees, and enjoyed welcoming new people to the community she cared so much about.

Sylvia is survived by two daughters; Brenda Wickwire of Jacksonville, North Carolina and Beth Sheridan of Tavares, Florida, two grandchildren; Matthew and Sarah and nephew Raymond Meeker and his children Grant, Samantha and Alexandra. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
