Shirley Wiley Young, 96 of Leesburg, FL passed away peacefully on June 12, 2023, surrounded by family.

Shirley was born in Leesburg, FL on July 10, 1926. She graduated from Leesburg High School in 1944, the same year in which she met and married Hebert P. Young. For the next seven years she moved with her Navy man to various Naval ports across Florida, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. In anticipation of Herb’s discharge from the Navy, Shirley moved their growing family back to Leesburg in 1951 to establish the family home in a much warmer climate! Shirley was a life-long member of Main Street Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir and could often be found working in the church nursery. After Main Street closed, she attended Central Baptist Church until her health began to decline.

Shirley had a love for children and worked at Skeen Elementary School as a Teacher’s Aide for over 20 years. One of her favorite positions was working with children who were learning English as a second language! Shirley enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed the time spent with the family fishing and camping. She also enjoyed working in the yard, arranging flowers, reading and listening to music to which she often sang along! Most important to Shirley was being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, relative and a friend to all.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Carrie Bell Sherrouse and Leon and Bessie Wiley, brother JH Wiley, her husband Herbert P. Young, daughter Lynn Williams, son Herbert P. Young, Jr., son-in-law Jack Williams, daughters-in-laws Mary Young, Doris Young, and grandson Brian Poole.

She is lovingly remembered by her son John W. Young, daughter Bonnie Young, daughter-in-law Grace Ann Young, Grandchildren Jacquelyn Williams (Alicia Ronan), Jeni (Frank) Fonseca, Leslie Williams, Brent Parker, Benn Parker, Kimberly (Anne Dodd) Young, Jennifer Lawrence, Great Grandchildren Nicolas Fonseca, Analise Fonseca, Calvin Winningham and Jennie Lynn Winningham.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of HarborChase Villages Crossing, Cornerstone Hospice and The Visiting Nurse Association for the loving and excellent care provided to Shirley.

A graveside memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Leesburg. Family and friends are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Alzheimer’s Association or Paralyzed Veterans of America.
