A report has revealed that an Ocala man and woman were killed in a six-vehicle crash Friday morning on the Florida Turnpike.
The 69-year-old man and his 68-year-old female passenger were traveling at 7:15 a.m in a 2022 Chevrolet Equinox which was stopped for traffic in the southbound lane near Mile Marker 286 near Howey-in-the-Hills, according to the report released late Friday night by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Their vehicle was rear-ended by a 2020 Toyota Corolla driven by a 23-year-old Tallahassee woman.
Her Toyota Corolla spun out and hit a tractor trailer truck driven by a 34-year-old Anthony man. The Toyota Corolla became engulfed in flames. The Tallahassee woman suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
The Ocala couple’s SUV was pushed into the rear of 2014 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 67-year-old Port Richey woman, who suffered minor injuries. The Ocala couple’s SUV went on to crash into a guardrail before striking a pickup driven by a 31-year-old Inverness man who was traveling with a 32-year-old female from Inverness. They were not injured.
The Ocala couple’s SUV ultimately became wedged under the trailer of a truck driven by a 35-year-old Dunnellon man, who escaped injury.
The Ocala couple were pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
