A Mount Dora man with a criminal record was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision after a witness followed him to the Target store parking lot.
Anthony Monroe Combs, 44, of 541 Coventry Court, was charged with driving with a suspended/revoked license (third or subsequent offense), leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, and three probation violations for prior drug convictions. Jail records show Combs has also been arrested for failure to pay child support and resisting an officer without violence.
At around 8:20 p.m. Sunday, a Mount Dora police officer responded to Target, 17450 U.S. Hwy. 441, in response to a hit-and-run collision that occurred on Eudora Road near the intersection with Highway 441. A witness told the officer he observed a Ford leaving the Walmart parking lot and fail to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic. The witness said a yellow Jeep traveling south on Eudora Road struck the rear of the Ford, according to the police report.
The witness said the driver of the Ford – later identified as Combs – fled the scene of the crash and he followed him to the Target parking lot. He said Combs jumped out of the driver’s seat and started yelling he was sorry, that he did not have a driver’s license and that he shouldn’t have run, the report said.
The officer then spoke with Combs, who admitted his license was suspended and he still chose to operate a vehicle, according to the report.
Combs is being held in the Lake County Jail on $11,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Lake County Court on Nov. 14.
