Leesburg teen charged with threatening to shoot up Tavares High School

A 17-year-old Tavares High School student was arrested Friday after he reportedly wrote a threatening message on a classroom computer.

The Leesburg teen was charged with making written or electronic threats to kill after a message was found that said, “I am going to shoot this school up next Monday,” according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office report.

When asked why he thought he was pulled out of class and brought to the assistant principal’s office, he readily admitted it was because of something he typed on a computer. He didn’t deny typing the message, but he was confused as to how the principal and law enforcement knew about it because he never sent it, the report said.

A student in the class during the next period found the message on the computer and informed the teacher, who in turn contacted the teacher who taught the previous class in the classroom. That teacher confirmed the student sitting at the computer was the teen, according to the report.

The teen was arrested and taken into custody.
