Speeding ticket results in Leesburg man’s drug charge

A Leesburg man was clocked doing 71 in a 45 miles per hour speed zone by a Fruitland Park police officer.

The speeding driver, 22-year-old Latavious Owens, was pulled over by the officer late Saturday night near the intersection of County Road 468 and Myer Avenue. The patrol officer was joined by a Lake County deputy and a K-9 officer.

Owens consented to a search of the car he had been driving. The K-9 officer located a black backpack next to the driver’s seat which contained a large quantity of a clear crystal substance which field tested as methamphetamine. A plastic container also held three baggies filled with methamphetamine and a digital scale. Officers found $1005 in Owen’s front pocket.

Owens was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked at the Lake County Jail with bond set at $51,000. He was released after posting the bond.
