A Waffle House cup’s contents led to a Umatilla man’s felony arrest during a traffic stop in Leesburg.
A Leesburg police officer stopped a car Monday afternoon for an expired license tag. When the officer approached the vehicle driven by 34-year-old Martavius Dawon Rogers, the officer noted a smell of marijuana coming from the car. The officer called in a records check and was told Rogers was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants. After backup officers arrived at the Sleepy Hollow Road and Park Hill Avenue intersection where the traffic stop occurred, the officer asked Rogers and his two passengers to exit the vehicle. When Rogers got out of the car he had a Waffle House disposable cup in his hand. The officer told Rogers to put the cup down. After securing Rogers, the officers found a small amount of marijuana in the car which Rogers admitted was his. When the officer took the lid off the Waffle House cup he saw a napkin floating on the liquid in the cup. After removing the napkin, the officer pulled a baggie out of the cup which contained a green leafy material which field tested as marijuana.
Rogers was charged with possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana and felony tampering with evidence, as well as the outstanding warrants.
He was booked at the Lake County Jail and released after posting $14,000 bond.
