A Kissimmee man was arrested Saturday night after he tried to get a refund on an item he stole at the Walmart in Clermont.

Jason Bowers, 34, was charged with use of a fraudulently obtained or false receipt. A loss-prevention employee at the store, located at 550 U.S. Hwy. 27, observed him shopping at about 10:02 p.m., according to an arrest report from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The employee saw Bowers select a jack from the store shelf, along with several grocery items. He used self-checkout to pay for the grocery items but not the jack. Bowers then used a receipt from earlier in the day, when he had purchased a similar jack, to request a refund from customer service for the jack he had just stolen, the report said.

Upon receiving a refund of $143.38, Bowers was taken into custody for the fraudulent transaction. Loss prevention was able to recollect the total amount refunded, and Bowers was given a refund for the newly purchased items, according to the report.

The New York native was transported to the Lake County Jail and released after posting $500 bond.
