A Leesburg man has been arrested after he was tracked down after fleeing the scene of a traffic stop.

A Fruitland Park officer was on patrol May 11 when he saw a Nissan passenger car fail to obey a stop sign on County Road 466A and U.S. Hwy. 27/441. The car was driven by 25-year-old Treyvious Caruthers and the passenger was 25-year-old Jaris Leon Griffin who told the officer that he owned the car. When the officer asked if there was anything illegal in the car both men appeared nervous. They refused to allow a K-9 do an open air sniff test of the vehicle and demanded to talk to a supervising officer. The officer indicated in his report that he could smell the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the car. When he asked the men to get out of the car they both refused. Caruthers reached for the gear shift and fled southbound on U.S. Hwy. 27/7441.

The officer obtained an arrest warrant charging Griffin with resisting a law enforcement officer. Eustis police picked Griffin up on the warrant. He is being held with no bond as he has also been charged with probation violations for his previous theft and burglary convictions.

Caruthers was captured Friday evening by Leesburg officers after fighting the police and striking a police dog.
