A Leesburg man with a history of battery was arrested for attacking his girlfriend after she liked another guy’s photo on social media.

An officer responded to a suspicious incident at a residence on 2113 Parkview Ave. around 6:44 a.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Upon arrival at the home, the officer observed a vehicle leaving the location. The officer met with the driver, who identified herself as the girlfriend of 24-year-old Zakari Jaquan Kamau. She was crying and the left side of her face was very swollen. She told law enforcement that she had been struck by her boyfriend of one week, the report said.

The victim explained that while she was lying down in Kamau’s room, she was awakened by him choking her. He then threw her on the ground from the bed, where she stood up and was struck multiple times in the face. Kamau choked her again but let her go of her. The victim then contacted law enforcement, the report said.

The victim further stated that she could not breathe when Kamau was choking her. She could not definitively say whether she was struck with an open or closed hand, but she knew the incident stemmed from her liking another guy’s picture on social media, the report said.

At that time, Kamau exited the residence and met with the officer. When asked what happened, Kamau replied “I already know what time it is.” The officer asked him multiple times to explain the incident, but to no avail, the report said.

A check of Kamau’s criminal history revealed two prior convictions for battery from May 2019 and October 2020, the report said.

Due to the victim’s injuries and Kamau’s refusal to provide a statement, Kamau was arrested and charged with domestic battery with one prior conviction. He was transported to the Lake County Jail after completing the booking process with no bond.
