Leesburg commissioners are hoping to convert a homeless camp to Habitat for Humanity housing.
In an unanimous vote Monday night, commissioners agreed to waive $42,000 in code enforcement fines owed on property located on Penn Street, south of Griffin Road and west of the commercial district on U.S. Hwy. 27.
The Blackwood Family Trust which currently owns the property will deed the property to the city, in exchange for the forgiveness of the fines.
The city will then donate the land to the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. It will work with the Leesburg High School’s Construction Academy to build homes on the parcel.
The lot is currently wooded and harbors the homeless. The donation would provide the Construction Academy the opportunity to build four or five homes on the property.
