Lake County to consider ordinance requiring criminal history checks for appointees to boards

The Lake County Board of County Commissioners will consider a new ordinance at Tuesday’s meeting which would require criminal history checks for all individuals appointed to a board or committee by the board of county commissioners.

All currently appointed individuals who are serving on committees or boards will be required to be fingerprinted and undergo a criminal history record check by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Any individual who maybe appointed in the future must be fingerprinted within 10 days of the appointment and will only be qualified upon when an acceptable report is received by the county manager.

The new ordinance would bar any individual who has been convicted, plead guilty or no contest, had adjudication withheld, prosecution deferred, been placed on probation, received a suspended sentence or forfeited bail in connection with a felony or crime that violates the public trust from serving on a board or committee.

If the commissioners approve the new ordinance a public hearing will be set for Jan. 10.
