16-year-old girl arrested after gun incident at Leesburg park

A 16-year-old Leesburg girl was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly using a gun to strike another teen at John Johnson Park in Leesburg.

Officers were dispatched to the park regarding a call that a fight had broken out involving two groups of juveniles, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department.

Police made contact with a juvenile victim who had a two-inch swelling on the right side of his head. That youth told the officers that a fight had broken out and that he attempted to stop the fight. The 16-year-old girl said she was going to get a gun and left the park, according to the victim’s statement. When she came back she had a black handgun with a green laser sight. She hit the victim when his back was turned and then fled the park. The boy was taken to the UF Health-Leesburg Hospital for treatment of the injury suffered.

The victim’s mother had been called to the park by her son to help stop the fight. She, along with several juveniles at the scene, told the officers that they saw the girl hit the boy with the gun.

The police contacted the suspect’s guardian who brought her to the Leesburg Police Department where the girl was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. She was then then turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
