Leesburg porch pirate apprehended thanks to doorbell alert

A Leesburg man who snatched Amazon packages from a front porch was apprehended thanks an alert from his doorbell.

A resident of a home on the 1000 block of Myrtle Breeze Court in Fruitland Park was at work when he got an alert from his Ring video doorbell which showed a man, later identified as 37-year-old Lorenzo Raymond Thomas Ballard, on his property, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.

Using his smart phone and the door bell loud speaker, the homeowner ordered Ballard to get off his property. A witness saw Ballard pick up two Amazon packages from the front porch and then move toward the backyard of the property. The homeowner spoke with the witness and told him that he had ordered Ballard to leave his property The witness confronted Ballard, called the police and kept him in the backyard until officers arrived.

Ballard was arrested on a charge of burglary. He was booked at the Lake County Jail on $5,000 bond.
