A Leesburg woman was arrested after she failed to obey a stop sign while she was at the wheel of a stolen Hertz rental car.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies observed a silver Nissan SUV on Wednesday afternoon as the driver failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Birchwood Court and Susan Street in Leesburg. A traffic stop was initiated and a check revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen last year to Orlando police. The dispatcher also said the license plate on the Hertz SUV had been assigned to a different vehicle.

The driver was identified as 23-year-old Sahvani Staple and she claimed the vehicle belonged to the father of her child. She denied any knowledge of the vehicle having been stolen and insisted that her baby’s father owned the SUV, according to the arrest report.

The deputies arrested the native of Jamaica on charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle and attached tag not assigned. She was booked at the Lake County Jail where bond was set at $2,500.
